I am planning on driving up to NYC for about a week. Is it a possibility to sleep in my car anywhere? If I stay at a hostel, would I also have to pay outrageous parking fees? Is inner city parking bad enough that it would be a good idea to bring my bike, and park somewhere free, and bike around the city? I am just trying to find the cheapest way to spend a week in NYC.
I would suggest taking a train into Manhattan. Amtrak drops off right downtown. Many of the sites are easy to walk to and the subways and busses are super easy to learn. The problem with a car is not only the parking which in manhattan can easily be $20. + for only a few hours, but also the tolls getting into NYC and between the 5 buroughs. It would be possible to find free overnight parking in queens or brooklyn. But with out of state license plates it may be asking for trouble, also you can spend A LOT of time stuck in traffic. Hope this helps and enjoy NY
if you aren't dead set on needing to stay in nyc, you can stay in jersey city in nj which is only a 10 minute $2 train ride outside of manhattan and would make parking and loding much cheaper
