Im travelling to Thailand On the 3rd of August this year, where i will be teaching English in Nong Khai for two months. After my placement has finished i want to explore the rest of Thailand and maybe a bit of Laos/Cambodia. I have no real plans at the moment except the teaching, and would love to hear about anyones experiences who has either:
a}Stayed in Nong Khai
b}Done any voluntary work
c}Will be in Thailand at this time
Also i am debating as to when to book my return flight, as am unsure of how much time i will be travelling round the country. Ive budgeted for £3000 spending money including my time teaching so any advice for anything here would be much appreciated.
hi dave . re your 3000 budget . when im in country i spend most of my time in chiang mai as its a good 40-50 percent cheaper to live than it is down south. you can get a good room in cm by the month for about 5000 bht (60 quid) and hire a bike for a month for about 2000 bht . 3 good places to stay : 'veerachi court'( soi 2 thapae road) - 'moon muang hotel'(50 yards north of thapae gate. down a little alley way. very friendly people run this place) and 'grand appartments'(just inside the north gate. big rooms and friendly staff)
a wee travel tip mate : buy 2 sarongs , they are very multi purpose and handy to have and a can of mosquito killer (i would rather be locked in a room with a tiger than a mosquito)
good luck bro , its a great country to travel in . very friendly people... john
I'm a Thai who used to spend 1 month in Nong Khai being internship in a radio station and also will be in Thailand at that time.
Nong Khai is a nice and quiet province in N/E Thailand. It's close to Vientiane, Laos, just cross the bridge.
August in Nong Khai will be very hot, and also some raining.
For traveling around the country, there are many cheap way to save your budget. 3000 pounds is so much than enough staying Thailand if you know how to spend it.
I can help you if you want to know more. Welcome to Thailand!
It sounds like your going with travel to teach too. I'm volunteering in Cambodia first for 4 weeks then 8 weeks in Nong Khai but i'd say I'll just have left before you get there.
I'm starting in Cambodia next week. After i arrive in nong khai i'll have a better idea of what the budget situation is like while volunteering. If you like I can get in touch with you then, and let you know roughly what I'll be spending.
If you have any other questions about volunteering I'll have answers for you in the next few weeks.
Hope thats some help!!
