internet access from laptop in India

Travel Forums Asia internet access from laptop in India

Heading to India shortly and I'm thinking of bringing my laptop to do some serious writing, blogging, photo uploads while on the trip. Am I crazy? Can I even get access from my own laptop while I'm there?

Seems like it would be much more fun to write from my own room than an Internet spot but maybe I'm wrong.

I will be traveling midrange+ style if it makes a difference.

Oh yeah - will my laptop be a target if I bring it?

I don't suppose India would be that much different than Bangkok as far as internet shops. In Asia you can bring your laptop to an internet shop and use their access, of course you also pay the same rate that you would if you used their computer.

With a laptop you not only have to worry about having it stolen you also might have it damaged.

Probably easier and safer just to use whatever internet shop is available for some of your correspondence and save it on a some kind of recording device or disc to bring home.

Good luck.

There are probably millions of laptops in India and the rate of stealing is not in millions or even hundreds. Whatever valuables you have, if you take proper care, the risk of stealing is probably same as anywhere else. There are no muggers like Chicago and life is generally pretty safe.

Your fellow travellers may rip you off as much as the general public. You always have to be cautious no matter what country you are in!

Just a side note on electrical power: it may be worthwhile to tag along a power surge protector (for laptops) while in India. Electrical power supply in India is notorious for "unclean" and "unreliable" in many parts of big cities. There have been problems with power theft that often overload the circuit. This translates to a high probablity for your laptops (and PCs) to get cooked by the surges. I personally had my PC's power supply changed twice in one month in Delhi.

Internet access in internet parlors is available in most parts save the really out of the way places like Himalayan peaks ;)and even there at a price... the speed is pretty decent. Rates are approx Rs. 30-35 (USD 0.75).

Nothing beats the convinience of a laptop and being able to access it anywhere.

You may look at buying an internet access card for your laptop. CDMA companies like reliance infocom have mobile internet access cards.

else you can also look at a dial up through you cell phone. am not too sure about the costs of this though.
