Travel Forums North America Mexico - Should we take Euros or Dollars

Hi there
Given the strong euro at the moment against the dollar, should we bother to buy dollars to take with us to Mexico or should we just take our Euros?
Thanks

hello

you might get better rates here but keep some dollars or pounds, you will get better prices sometimes for some goods in dollars or pounds.

now the dollar is between pesos; 10.30 to 10.60 x 1 DOLLAR, but remember especially for souvenirs, perfumes, make up, leather, the higher the price you get for your dollars in those stores, the better it will be to buy in dollars rather than pesos...

do the math:

1 wallet = 90 pesos, but they take your dollar at 11 - good price
same wallet = 90 pesos, but if they take your dollar at 9.50 PAY IN PESOS.

IT ALSO depends on where do you go.

dollars are taken in very touristic places, otherwise, you will have to exchange them first at the bank

good luck

American dollars are commonly accepted in touristy areas of Mexico. So you should definitely bring American $$ instead of Euros. If you want a good exchange rate, use your credit card (whenever you can) and take money out in Mexico from cash machines instead of exchanging money at a bank or a bureau de change.

Mexico City and other large Mexican Cities have "Casa de Cambios" that change USD, Euros, CAN, Pound Sterling, Yen, etc. at the daily rate. Change some when you arrive at airport and the rest later. Bring also ATM Debit or Credit Card. Travellers Checks can be changed but Passport and other photo ID is required and less and less banks worldwide care to deal with them. Don't carry your passport unless traveling one place to another, if you use ATMs do so in the day, in Latin america find the best places to use ATMs Supermarkets and Shopping Malls with vigilantes, and have your partner watch your back.

I would definitely bring American Dollars if you can as opposed to the Euro- When I was there, most of the places I stayed accepted it, and I didn't even need to exchange anything. But like anywhere, I think its best to put stuff on your credit card whenever you can.
