Hi everybody,

I'm going to travel for about 2 months starting in Kuala Lumpur from 17 Dec 06 to 14 Feb 07. I've booked an onward flight from Taipei, so this is my final destination.

My itinerary isn't planned yet, but I'm wondering if there's a chance to reach Taiwan (Kaohsiung or Taipei) from China mainland, preferably Hong Kong, for a reasonable fare. Going to Taiwan by ferry would be best.

Otherwise I see no alternative to returning to Singapore and flying with Jetstar Asia (about 100 € including tax).

Many thanks for your help,
Michael

When I take China Airlines from TPE to Bangkok some of the time they stop in Hong Kong. China Airlines (CI) often has discount flights. Check them out. Also Cathay Pacific and EVA Air fly into TPE.

There is a ferry that runs from Xiamen to Taipei via the islands, although i'm not entirely sure it's a year round thing. Because of Chinese - Taiwanese relations, there are no direct flights etc between the two allowed, except for occassionally permitte ones at special times (i.e. Chinese New Year). Instead, all flights must go via a foreign point.

What this means in actuality is that all China - Taiwan connections go via Hong Kong, and the hong Kong - Taiwan corridor is the worlds busiest air corridor by some distance. So there is never a lcak of flights between the two. There are often cheap flights from macau and a few other places as well (BKK etc)

The boat is apparently quite cheap, but I have no idea if it's possible all year around or not.

Hi Gelli,

do you know by chance the ferry-running company's name? I could not find anything on the net... I really would like the option going to Taiwan from Xiamen!

Bye, Michael

As far as I know, the boat between Xiamen/Jinmen and Taiwan isn't open to foreigners. You might want to consider flying through Hong Kong instead.

you can fly from Hong kong or Xiamen to Teipei or Kaohsiung...i highly recommend you take a flight from Hong Kong instead of Xiamen. Cathaypacific Airlines is reliable...
NO BOAT!! It get you into trouble easily.
