Unless you can confirm with the airlines that they allow you to carry the guitar as hand lugagge or your guitar comes with a hard case - don't do it.

I was on flight back from London to Kuala Lumpur when I saw a very angry passenger with a guitar broken in two even though there was a 'fragile' sticker on its bag.

If its a good expensive one, or has sentimental value, I wouldn't.

Its lovely when someone has a guitar (if they can play!) but you've got to carry the wretched thing somehow!

I did some traveling in africa with a guitar, it was nice to have but often drew unnecessary attention, especially when i was in a rush and someone either wanted me to play it or they themselves wanted to. Also most of the small local transports would charge me extra because of the size. I've seen "Backpackers" guitars which have good sound quality and are easier to carry, that might be an option if you're not willing to go to long without strumming some strings.
good luck

I'm starting to think about getting one of those backpacker guitars for a year+ RTW backpacking trip. I'm gonna try to pack light, but I think the extra weight/size may be worth writing music in an isolated paradise, or making friends and communicating w ppl who can't speak English. Does anybody have any experience with them?

Although they have one of my favorite acoustic brands, Martin: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/home/navigation?q=backpacker+guitar ... I've seen other brands on ebay including soft cases for less than $25.

Ive met a whole heap of backpackers travelling with their guitars. I gravitate to them light a bee to a honeyjar. Its so nice when you happen to be stuck in a bus station or something and someone starts strumming away beside you. Most of them guarded them like babies, slept with them in their arms on busses for fear of having them robbed...so I suppose they can be a bit cumbersome..but totally worth it, id say.

I miss my piano severely since leaving home. :(
