Aaarrghh!! i am starting to dread my trip to Cambodia.. it seems not only have i chosen the hottest month (april) to travel.. but it also happens to be the Khmer New Year..

could anyone give me any idea how difficult it is to get around during the new year celebrations??
i.e. is transport still readily available?

I have been in both Thailand and Cambodia during Songkran, April 12-15 this year. Pattaya drags it out for a week. There will be transport, but probably will be full of Khmers going to and from home. Get it in the spirit of the holiday and get wet! It is hot anyway, so get out there and let them 'bless you' with water.

hi mike,

thanks .. i'm quite keen, on one hand, to be there for the New Year (always fascinated by local tradition).. i'm just concerned that the whole country shutsdown for a week.. i only have about 15 days in cambodia.. and don't weant to get stuck.. i'm trying to see as much as i can.

Rob;
I don't see this as a problem. You need 3-4 days in both Siem Reap(SR) and Phnom Penh(PP) anyway. Pick one, SR would be a better choice(IMHO) and spend Songkran there. It is blazing hot in SR in April, getting water tossed on you will truly be a blessing! The only problem would be transport. But, we usually take tourist transport and the locals take a cheaper option, so no problem. If your budget allows, I would go to SR via boat from PP and back via road. The road is OK now and much cheaper than the boat. The boat is an experience and does offer great photo ops, so worth doing, once. Relax and you will have a great trip. PM me if you want details.

That's what I concern too. I will be going to Cambodia for 9 days and arrive at Phnom Penh at 12th April. Probably will stay there for 2-3 days then head to SR and get a 3 days pass in Angkor. Will take a boat from PP to SR...hpe can view the Vietnamese floating village and Tonle Sap!

Wow, water all over the tourist? Can't imagine when i am there with my my racksack soaked with water

Hot!Hot!Hot!Better get a good sunblock.

Dana, I will be arriving at PP airport on 12th April after 5pm. Could you please check for me is there any cheap transport for me to get to PP after 5p.m.? I heard only taxi is available which acquires USD30 per car.

2. Any cheap GH in PP which is below USD5 per night? April is the peak season for PP and i think many rooms are full b4 my arrival there...and have to search for it after 5pm arriving airport.

Lloking forward your reply. All the best to your project too.

Cheers,
Lee

When we were in Siem Reap last May we stayed in the Red Piano guesthouse, it was lovely. Might be too expensive - I don't know your budget?

Alternatively, have a look at the accommodation on this site (link up at the top!)

I paid $5/night at Popular GH, but that was years ago. Not sure what they charge now. Go to talesofasia.com and read current info on SR guesthouses.
