Our tastes-

We like to stay out of the crowds - but on the coast - we are water-lovers who like "counterculture" spots- which California has plenty of!
You can look up on the internet:
Fairfax
Santa Cruz
Mill Valley
Ojai

A cheaper alternate to Santa Barbara for those who aren't concerned with image: Ventura or Oxnard.

Catalina Island can be a clever little trip if you get there just before school lets out OR after it finishes- the businesses are still going but the crowds are down. Take the express boat, though!!!

In you want to go to see nature, we prefer Kern County and Sequoia National Park (both are stunning) over Yosemite, due to crowds. If you want to get near Yosemite, look up places to stay in Bass Lake- the name is undignified, but it is a stones-throw away and has better deals.

There are lots of "Ghost Towns" in California, which can be educational. See http://www.ghosttownexplorers.org/

Culture: San Francisco has it in spades.

People make a lot of fuss over Napa Valley wine country, but we find wineries everywhere. Certainly not as upscale, but a wonderful holiday nevertheless.

Joshua Tree area is surreal and beautiful in the winter months.

Locals in L.A. - the Fairfax Farmer's Market is a place to still see people who have hung out there for decades.

We also fouund a great weird little "get-away" a couple hour drive inland from L.A. in Riverside (go when it is not the dead of summer OR at Christmas) see: http://www.missioninn.com/

California is a big state... if you have a time of year and a region in mind, people might be able to dial something in for you!
