Hi, i'm starting a 4 month Trip of South and North America on the 9th of April in Rio and I’m starting to get a bit nervous as its my first time travelling on my own and I’ve heard a few horror stories about Brazil. Has anybody got any hints or tips on whats best to do when I arrive in Rio (I’ve got a bed in the mellow yellow hostel near cococabana booked) and how to make the best of my time out there. Cheers! Ali
the best thing to do is the get the bus into the city from just outside the airports front door. its called bus real and it will only cost 5.50 real. it goes past botofogo, copcaban and ipanema. just say to the driver where you want to get off and he´ll let you know when your there. its a safe way to travel as well. there are loads of good hostels in rio as well, especially in botofogo which i think is a safer area than copacaban.

yeah...if she's fluent in Portuguese no, I'm sure you would be fine but I also think if it's her first time in SA theres no shame in getting a taxi and then mastering the busses which are lets face it a little different.
Ali, I did a bit in Brazil on my own a couple of years ago I was just 20. There's absolutely nothing to be worried about. I was there three months (I think In Rio nearly 3 weeks) and nothing bad happened to me!
The thing is to be sensible about stuff, try and blend in use your street smarts (Im sure you have some), I was practically a native by the time I had to leave
There's loads of old threads if you do a search for Rio, I remember answering one a couple of months ago on things to do and where to stay stuff like that.
Anyway, Rio is amazing, no words to describe it without swearing so I'll leave it at that but it's def one of my favourite places to be, the weekend street parties in Lapa are immense!
Also if you want anymore advice please dont hesitate to msg me
take it easy
I'm from Rio (although living in Sao Paulo for over a year) and I think I can help you!
I wouldn't trust taxi drivers right away. There are lots of scams involving taxi drivers and the international airport.
If I were you, I would try to contact your hostel to find out if they have any kind of pick up service. They can also recommend specific cab companies that work the airport area.
If that doesn't work, the bus is PRETTY safe. You can trust it. Just make sure you have the correct address you want to go to, specific directions. For instance, if your address is "Av. Atlantica 1000", try to expand it to "Av. Atlantica 1000, right next to Mc Donalds, it's in the corner of Atlantica and Main Street", and so on. The bus drivers are pretty used to tourists and the buses are a lot cheaper than the taxi ride from the international airport.
Let me know if you have ANY other questions, I can help you out!!
