Am plannning a trip to NZ for Jan-Feb 2007 and would like to do Farmstays, B & B's, etc. Would love input from folks as to their most memorable ones...not luxury class. ($100-150 NZD/night)
Any other accommodations that deserve our consideration would be fine, too. We'll be 3 weeks...1 week N. Island, 2 weeks South.
I can tell from our personal stay experience:
In Punakaiki - Te Puna Bush Haven was awesome - we had the whole house to ourselves - including kitchen facility, laundary etc. Strongly recommend - only minutes from pancake rocks and next to Truman track.
We spent a night in Lake Tekapo - we stayed at HighView Apartments. The owner lived in the lower-floor, and we had the whole upper floor, with Kitchen, 2 bedrooms, washer/dryer, fireplace. And 2-3 balconies, with great view of the lake and the mountains. Also the view from the living room's huge glass window is beautiful.
In Haast, we stayed at the 'world heritage' hotel - it was ok, but I may not stay there again next time I visit that area.
Other places we stayed in hotel chains, mostly BestWestern.
You may message me if you need any other details, for either Island.
My personal recommendation for activities:
Zorb in Rotorua and glacier-hike in Franz/Fox glaciers. And ya - visit to Milford sound - which we could not do :-(
Happy travel planning !
If you find yourself in the middle of the North Island, at Waitomo, I can recommend Te Tiro Cabins (http://www.waitomocavesnz.com/).
They are a 5km drive up the hill out of town, but such an unusual and pleasant surprise for us that we went back specifically on our way south again.
