Just got back from New Zealand. I had four weeks there which was just enough time to do the highlights of both islands.
I was not that prepared for how cool it can get at night over there so either pack some thermals or you can buy them pretty cheap at a shop called Kathmandu - most big cities seemed to have one.
I made the mistake of spending three days in Auckland - just another city and not as nice as Sydney, NZ is really about the outdoors not cities.
In Auckland there is an airbus to the city - cheapest way to travel and discount if you have a backpackers card.
Starting to save to get to NZ again!!

Hey, thanks for the run down! I'm off to NZ in June so it's always good to hear how other recent travels have gone.
If you can, try to get north of Auckland. The area is called Northland and the pacific coast highway has some spectacular scenery. As junglejim has said, Auckland is just another big city, so don't plan too much time there.
Thanks, good info. Will be landing 5/24 Queenstown and wondered
about the weather. In the U.S. its just starting to warm up for
The weather is starting to cool down for winter. I saw on the news that they had snow down south(queenstown, southern alps).
Thanks for the info - very useful
I'll be in New Zealand for 4 months, Sept - Jan, can't wait!
