Is it worth hiring a car in Tanzania, and camping in serengeti/Ngorongoro crater- or just visiting for a few days as part of an overland trip?

Hiring a car is always more exspensive than hiring a car and driver with equipment from a tour operator.
Most overland company no longer use their trucks to enter the park, they use small vehicles, so it might be worth asking if you are planning on a overland trip as well :-)

Lots of companies in Arusha that can hook up a car with driver for you as part of a small group tour (4-5 people). I wrote about my safari here with comfort safaris. Prices have gone up since I was there due to the increase in national park fees, but it'll give you a guideline. I just booked my safari upon arrival in Arusha, which took me a day to do. I had a list of TATO - Tanzania Association of Tour Operators on hand to make sure I knew their credentals.
