Hey does anyone know if Worcester is a good city? As i'm looking for a nice quaint place that has good nightlife/shops etc. yet isn't too near London (as i'm trying to get away from there for a bit) but not too far so i can still visit family/friends easily, so any suggestions are welcome except Brighton as i've been there so many times and i think it's a bit too close to the capital still :) Thanksss

firstly, in response to the huge amount of comments on the matter. Personally i think the north/south divide is outdated both in monetary terms and stereotypes. and the difference in friendliness from someone who lives in Manchester but is from near Bristol is more specific to London, not the whole south and people are generally the same across the country apart from London where maybe people are more closed off but that is due to the size of city rather than any inherent unfriendliness.

anyway, i think Worcester is an ok city, i've been to it a few times as i have relatives there and it's not so far from bristol, for shops, it's very much a standard small city with the usual highstreet chains but not much in the way of independent stores, um nightlife i think there are a few bars/pubs in centre but not a huge choice of clubs, however if as it's not too far from birmingham if you get bored there's always the possibility of organising going there. It's quite quiet as well and fairly pretty in the centre, close to some attractive countryside in Malverns and decent rail links via birmingham, so yeah, i think it's a good place to live if you don't want somewhere to big, but it's not the liveliest of places. maybe try somewhere like bath which is slightly more lively, more attractive and more to see and better shopping, but also is more expensive in centre.

hope that was in some way helpful!

1. London
2. Liverpool
3. Birmingham
4. Manchester
5. Bristol
All those are great nightlife, especially London if your rich anyway.

Some quieter Cities like Nottingham, Wolverhampton, Sheffield are nice too.

MANCHESTER! MANCHESTER! MANCHESTER!

It has everything you could possibly want

1-Great bars and clubs
2-Shops, it has the trafford Centre plus a 2nd shopping mall in manchester itself (The Arndale Centre) again 1.4 million sq ft.
3-The biggest and most popular Indoor arena in the world!! THE M.E.N ARENA, every act under the sun has been here!
4-The Two of the best football stadiums in the UK , old trafford and the City of Manchesters stadium.
5- Great buildings of history and interest.
6- It has one of the best Hilton hotels in the UK and is the tallest in Manchester.
7- Oasis, the Smiths, chemical brothers, Happy Mondays, The stones roses plus many more all came from here!!
8- Only 450,000 population so its not as crazy as London!

you will not find another city in england that has all the above , Manchester is simple the best.

the worst place for crime and trouble is London my opinion, but every city has its crime and litter.

I totally agree; Manchester has everything you need without the overcrowdedness, cost and commuting distances that London has. I used to live in the city centre of Manchester and walk to work, something that would be prohibitively expensive in London. It's a great city.

Another city that has all the above.....Liverpool

1-Great bars and clubs
2-Shops - the city centre has just had a one billion pounds overhall and massive extention
3-A big indoor arena - the Echo Arena where all the huge bands play
4-two of the best football clubs - Liverpool and Everton
5-Great builings of history and interest - too many to mention (but the waterfront is one of the most recognisable cityscapes in the world)
6- TWO brand new Hilton hotels
7- THE BEATLES!!!! Need I say more?
8-450,000 population

and it is right next to Manchester, so basically the North West is a pretty good place to live!

London has a high crime level. Birmingham is much better to live in.
