I'm going to Los Angeles for about a week and I'm looking for suggestions on a place to stay. I would prefer not to stay near the airport as I will be spending most of my time in Santa Monica and West Hollywood.

I would like a private room but don't mind sharing a bath. I have heard there are some decent European Style hotels in LA but I don't know how to find them.

Any suggestions are apreciated.

Thank you.

I can suggest a few places, but it depends on your budget. One nice place right in the heart of things, but not overly expensive (well, for this area, anyway) is the Hilgard House in Westwood. Their website is:

There are also places like the Sofitel, Grafton on Sunset, etc. but these tend to be more expensive. You can find some of these on

I'm going to let you in a secret now that I've never posted before. The single most unusual place you can stay in this area is the "Magic Castle Hotel". There's nothing special about the hotel, but when you stay there, you are allowed to go to the Magic Castle (which is located next to the hotel) for the evening. This is a special magician's club open only to professional magicians that work in the LA and Las Vegas area. Go stay on a single night (I suggest Friday or Saturday) and go to the club--it's really a blast. In addition to the four or five shows they offer for free each night, the club itself is unusual--the bar has things like bar stools that change in height extremely slowly. One second your date is even with you, a half-hour later, she is about a foot and a half higher up than you are. Also, the hotel is only a few blocks from the heart of the Hollywood area.

The World City Search website has a decent list of hostels and hotels near your area of interest. I particularly like the overview map, which plots all the hotels and attractions on a single map so you get a good idea of where you want to base yourself. This comes in handy in saving yourself a lot of time traveling around L.A.

Have fun.
