I am considering taking the yangtze river cruise in the expense of not visiting the longji rice field (time constraint). I would like to get opinion from those who had taken the cruise and what you think of it.

I am considering taking the tourist ferry from Chongqing downstream to Yichang. The ferry is mainly for Chinese tourists and I've been advised by somebody who travelled on the ferry, not to do it alone-nobody speaks English and everybody stares at you as if you were in a zoo.Not many westerners travel on the ferry. It is a lot cheaper than the cruise ships though!!I'm probably going to chance it and take the ferry-it'll definitely be an experience!!

I just had a cruise from Wuhan to Chongqing over a 4 day trip, thru the dam. It was interesting, and in some places one can find relatively rural peoples. Mostly it was a last chance to see that part of the world before the Chinese flood the place and drown over 100 historical sites and displace 1 million plus people. Otherwise, it was mostly misty and grey, which I was given to understand is what the weather is like there since they started flooding up river as they put the dam in. I cannot say it was the best part of china that I've seen.
