Malaysia and Thailand is a must...

How long do you plan to be there? What are your interests?
This would help us give you more specific suggestions.

BKK is probably the cheapest SEA country to fly into because of competition. So many airlines stop in BKK that you should be able to get a decent price almost any month. Use 'kayak.com' for a base price on flights from the US to SEA. Then join 'Sky Auction', it is free and you will see what others are bidding for the flight you want. Get a list of consolidators that specialize flying to Asia by using a 'google' search. Once you have an idea the max you want to pay, join priceline.com. Now you can use low bids to see the best they offer.

Thailand is almost a must if going to Asia. Very visitor friendly, cheap and has everything; beautiful beaches and diving spots, hill tribes and trekking, ancient ruins, wild nightlife. Malaysia has more of the same, nice islands and beaches, highlands, big cities. I would opt for Cambodia and Angkor Wat. Cambodia is much poorer than its neighbors and should be seen. There are now cheap flights BKK-PP on Air Asia or go overland and see Angkor, then boat/bus down to Phnom Penh. Once in PP, it is an easy & cheap bus ride to VietNam. Only $6 PP-HCMC. VN has really opened up in the last 5 years and has plenty to see and enjoy. Air Asia has a cheap flight; HAN-BKK. That is my suggestion for a first trip. PM me if you need details. Good Luck.

For something different try Myanmar. You can get a cheap flight from Bangkok.
While some are ethically opposed to travel there, there are ways you can avoiding supporting the regime too extensively and the more people who see the country the more voices in support of change we will hear. People of Myanmar should not be punished for being ruled by autocrats. Sorry getting a little political.....great people, cheap, Bagan is amazing, Inle Lake serene and Yangon uniquely chaotic.
