sir_igor has indicated that this thread is about Vietnam

Hi there

This summer I'm going to Vietnam for 17 days. I will travel from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi and I think this route:
1. Ho Chi Min City
2. Nha Trang
3. My Son
4. Hue
5. Hoa Lu - Ninh Binh
6. Hanoi
7. Halong Bay

Does anybody know a better route? what's your experience?

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks a lot

I think it's a good route you are having. Wishing all the best for your trip. Ahh you can travel by bus or by train for faster from point to point. Although do you plan everything yet?
HCM- Nhatrang will take you about 8 or 9 hours by bus so train is better. But if you go SGN-Mui Ne-Nha Trang then by bus it is no problem because you can take few days relax at Mui Ne, another beautiful beach.
Addition, Danang is a good place to go which is famous about Hoi An acient town.

From my own point of view, i don't think that is a good route. In fact, 17 days is just enough for discovering main scenic spots only. If your time spread to all the seven cities as mentioned, it's not enough to enjoy anything. As far as i'm concerned, around Saigon or Hochiminh City gathers a lot of visit-worthy like Cu Chi tunnel or Black Lady mountain and stuff...
It's up to u, but i sufggest u limit your traveling city to 4 only. Saigon- Nha Trang - Hue- Halong Bay.
You may drop by Hanoi and one day must be enough...

In My opinion the best rout for your 17 day tour in Vietnam is:
HO Chi Minh City
Mekong Delta,
Mui ne beach
Nha trang
Hoi An
My Son
and Maybe Sapa for a culture tour to discover the daily life of the north west minority people and enjoy the beautiful sceneries of the 1650m about the sea level Town
You should travel by car, train and air to taste the beautiful sceneries on the way.

have good time in Vietnam

THANK YOU all for your detailed help.

After your replies, maybe I should think better the route. I don't plan nothing to travel from point to point but I guess I'll use the bus because I think that train is more slower. Does anybody know (aprox.) how much time takes travelling by bus between below cities? I Know that HCM-Nhatrang will take about 8-9 (thanks to sunnyday :) ).

HO Chi Minh City - Mekong Delta
HO Chi Minh City - Mui ne beach
Mui ne beach - Nha trang
Nha trang - Hoi An
Hoi An - My Son
My Son - Hue
Hue - Hanoi
Hanoi - Halong

Hope you can help me! :) thanks

I did a very similar route and it took me four weeks, unless you want to be rushing (it takes you all day, or all night to get to most places) I would extend your holiday time.

Your assumption that the bus is not quite accurate - generally they take the same time but the train is far safer - especially at night. However, your routing practically dictates the use of the bus.

As to your route, can I suggest a variation?

Ho Chi Minh City >> Mui Ne Beach >> Nha Trang >RAIL - SLEEPER> Da Nang (change to local bus or taxi for Hoi An-25 mins)(back to Da Nang to get the long distance bus) Da Nang >4H> Hue >> different bus >> NAM DINH >> Flying Fish >> HAI PHONG >> Flying Fish >2H> HA LONG >4H> HA NOI.

I recommend using rail between Nha Trang and Da Nang as you can sleep, saving time and a hotel room price. You would have to book this ahead from Hoi An.

AVOID USING T.M. BROTHERS BUSES - DANGEROUS EQUIPMENT, POOR DRIVERS and the owner is a liar (to me personally) making the whole operation a risk, At least one passenger has died whilst in their 'care'.

Being an independent Traveller to Ha Long is no impediment - in fact there is an advantage as you can view any boat you propose to sail on rather than taking 'pot luck' with tour operators in Ha Noi.

The Flying Fish hydrofoil boats are faster than bus or rail! They are based upon Russian torpedo boats design and are found all over the world. In Greece they are known as the Flying Fish - and cover many of the Aegean Islands.
