I was told that unlike getting currency at the airport here in the UK where the price is extortionate, that in spain the best rates are found at the airports! Is this true? Has anybody any recommendations for getting cash (euros) while abroad at the best rate? I dont know if the ATM, bank or airport is best???
thanks in advance!
In general when I need cash in a local currency I get a couple hundred dollars in the airport, even though the fees are high, just so I know I have some cash when I land. After that I use an ATM machine in the local banks of my destination, whoever you bank with should be giving you a very fair exchange rate... If not, look into another bank.
The ATMs use the spot rate for the day, so they are neither expensive nor cheap. I can't imagine places at the airport being cheaper than a bank rate.
One tip when changing money; ask how many euros (or whatever) you will get when you exchange your pounds (or whatever), then do your own calculation to see whether the rate is okay. The reason for this is that some places offer what appears to be a good rate, but slug you with outrageous commission.
I've always went to banks. I would make sure I had cash on me before I left home to avoid high fees at airports,a nd then for the rest of my trip I used banks to get cash and exchange travellers cheques. Just stay away from independant change bureaus! Those have such high rates and commissions! It's unrreal!
the best bet is an ATM machine and in some countries the best rate can be foundat post offices in italy, london etc.....
