I've heard a lot about this in passing but can anyone point me to an official explanation or website? What does it involve? Can anyone do it? So many questions... Any answered I'll be grateful.

I don't really know what you're referring to - I haven't seen much of anything mentioned about sponsorship here lately. What kind of visa are you talking about? (No sponsorship is needed for a working holiday visa.)

Businesses can sponsor temporary employees if they meet these requirements (more general information).

Likewise, companies can also sponsor people for immigration.

There are other sponsorship options besides the business ones. Family members, trainees and students can also be sponsored to come over.

My wife was the one who sponsored my permanent residence in Australia :)

Your best bet is to read the information on the official website of the immigration department: Sponsorship Overview

Hello Windmill,

About 80,000 people a year are sponsored on temporary visas (3-months to 4-years) in one category alone. The employer has to be an approved by the govt as a sponsor; not all can do it. Then there's State sponsorship where you meet skills criteria in a certain state of Australia and the state govt approves you; permanent sponsorship by a family member; spouse sponsorship; entertainers; and the list goes on and on. Unless you are sure where you fit to narrow down what is valid for you requires a bit of research and often the help of a professional migration consultant.
