Me and my friend will be traveling europe this May and I was wondering if Frankfort, Germany was worth visiting. We are really not into museams. If Its not worth going to, any suggestions? We are going to visit Berlin, Munich, bavaria, and the black forest. Thanks
What Frankfurt are you talking about? There are two cities with that name: Frankfurt am Main and Frankfurt/Oder. One is near Berlin, the other is the one with the two airports (Frankfurt Main Central and Frankfurt/Hahn).
I've been to Frankfurt a.M., and the thing I liked most was the old town not too far away from the official IYH/HI hostel and the Jewish musuem. I'm not much of a party girl, but the nightlife is supposed to be interesting too. Frankfurt a.M. is the finincial capital of Europe, nicknamed Mainhattan for its skyline of the big bank buildings. The people who live there are a curious sort - all the big wheelers and the ordinary blue collar workers make a unique mixture in the bars. It is also the city of organised crime in Germany, no other city has that many drug addicts and high class prostitutes.
Most people only stay there for one or two nights prior or after their flight in and out of Germany.
BTW, why do you want to go to Munich, Bavaria, the Black Forest and Berlin only when there is so much more to Germany than just these areas? Tell me what you are interested in (outdoors, party, beach, etc) and I could advise you on fun areas no Japanese tour bus has ever gone near to.
What about Leipzig or the Harz mountains? Ferropolis sound good to you? Tell me when you go and what budget you have, and let me make suggestions. Pretty please. It always makes me angry if people assume they have seen Germany if they have seen Berlin or the Black Forest.
Oh God do not go to Frankfurt am Main. I've been there... it's so no a tourist friendly city. I would visit Munchen and Berlin, and if you have more time, some random villages in the countryside.. But yeah, no Frankfurt.
Frankfurt am Main is a great city at the river Main. A boat trip on the river is very nice. There are several great clubs/discos/cafes to go to. Don't know how many days you are planning but also the city Mainz is worth a visit. If you like nature take a trip on the river Rhine to the Lorely !
personally I do not like Frankfurt am Main as it's too much of a big city, with it's skyscrapers and stuff. (I might as well stay at home.) It lacks the rustic charm many other places in Germany have. And I quite agree with Maia that Germany's more than Bavaria and the Black Forest, though I've never been to these places, but they appear most frequently in travel brochures....which make me wanna avoid them.
What do you look for in a place?
