Hey,

I'm in the process of planning my RTW trip but I think I'm trying to squash too many things into 12 months. I'd rather spend longer in one place to fully appreciate it than moving about all the time to try and see 'everywhere'.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to sacrifice one of the following countries from itinery: Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam. I cant decide which one, so I need some help....please!

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers

Everyone has their favorites and you will a different answer from each who respond. I have no experience in Laos, so I cannot offer any help there. Cambodia really has Angkor Wat going for it, but not much else. I would vote for VietNam. There is just more variety. Hills tribes up in Sapa & trekking, HaLong Bay for beautiful scenery and island hopping, Cham ruins in many locations, plenty of beach options, SCUBA diving in Nha Trang, cool, beautiful DaLat and the Central Highliands, the Mekong Delta and of course many intereting cities. HaNoi, Hue, Hoi An & HCMC are all worth a visit.

VN is the more interesting country and worth more of your time, IMHO. I would still hop over to Cam. and do a 3 day Angkor Wat trip. You certainly can spare 5 days in your RTW trip. My 2 cents.

Weather in Vietnam now is very beautiful, sunny and warm. This is the best time of the year to see some beach that Vegasmike6 recommended.

Get to Laos b4 it becomes too expensive with mass tourism...YOu wont get harassed as you would in Cambodia & Vietnam. In terms of scenery & culture, Laos has much more to offer - mountains, tribes, history, etc. You have Luang Prabang ( world heritage site ), you have 22 ethnic tribes in Luang Namtha, you have Ponsavan ( Plain of Jars)...cambodia & Vietnam are being over run by tourists...$4$ Laos has more to offer...you can stretch your money...

If youre wanting to know which one of the three you should leave out, id personally say vietnam, Cambodia is superb not just angkor watt, but the whole country and laos is completely different country thats just gotta be experienced, before like previously mentioned tourism explodes there. With regards to Vietnam its a nice place with lots of things to do but its very in yer face and it becomes a bit tiring after a while.
In fact why dont you do all of them and cut down youre time in oz by a month, which i presume youre going to? Problem solved....

I've not that long ago spent a bit over 5weeks in Vietnam, and whilst i enjoyed some of it (and there are lots of lovely places there), it is the only country i've ever been to that i was happy to leave, and wouldn't be overly bothered if i never returned.

In Lao now, and loving it. It's stunning here.

Not yet been to Cambodia, but will be in a month or so's time (assuming i can drag myself out of Lao)

This thread is throwing up arguments both for and against each country....exactly what I was expecting really. Thank you everyone who has contributed! However I'm still no closer to deciding what I'm going to do.

Vietnam sounds cool, as does Laos...but so does Cambodia. Hmmmm, too many choices, so little time.

OK, I'll but it this way, I've given myself about 60 days to do all 3. Not much I know, so shall I just split it 3 ways?(Suppose I could steal a few extra days here and there..) Or devote more time to one country that has more to offer? I really enjoyed trekking whilst in Thailand, and I'm also a diver so I'd like to try some SCUBA too....

My head is spinning:

Time is ticking ....

Hmmmm?? I cant decide

Neil,
I have been to Cambodia over 10 times on visa runs and going to/from VN, Angkor 3 times. I just don't see one month in Cam. A week up in Siem Reap and the north for Angkor and the other ancient ruins, 3-4 days in PP, perhaps some beach time in Sihanoukville. To spend 30 days in Cam. you would have to be an aficionado of Khmer culture and archeological sites. If not, 2 weeks should do it.

Cheers Mike,

I'll keep that in mind. Perhaps I'll be able to do all three afterall!
I'll have to really look into what I want to see there.
