I've just read on one of the threads that you can get a back packer discount card. - Is this true? and what kinda discount do you get?

Most hostels in New Zealand are part of an organization. This can be either YHA (Youth Hostel Association, part of HI (Hostelling International)), which is the largest worldwide hostel organization, VIP (which is more loosely organized), Nomads (only has a few hostels in New Zealand) or BBH (New Zealand only; most other independent hostels in New Zealand are part of this). A few hostels "belong" to more than one of these organizations, or give discounts even to members of other organizations.
If you're a member of one of these organizations, you get a few dollars discount on a night's stay at hostels belonging to this organization. YHA discounts are $4, versus $1-$2 for the other three, but YHA hostels are slightly more expensive to start with, so that evens out.

Transport organizaztions give you discounts if you have a backpacker card (one of these four, or ISIC (international student card)), and at least YHA and VIP (maybe also the others?) have also arranged some small discounts ($5 here, 10% there) with various stores that might sell things useful to backpackers (a camping store, a bookstore, movie theater, car rental, restaurants, etc).

The cards pay for themselves if you stay in member hostels for more than 10 nights (YHA) - 15 nights (others), or if you buy any kind of buspass. The other discounts are a nice extra.

Err, actually, I don't know why I replied to that with information about New Zealand, as I know you're going to Australia. *shakes his head* Australia is almost identical though, except that YHA discounts are only $3.50 and that there's no BBH in Australia.

Hey Jazzbrit

As far as I am aware there are three main cards, VIP, YHA and NOMAD. For New Zealand there is also BBH.

Anyhoo, they all pretty much offer the same types of discount, i.e. $1 off a night at hostels and stuff like that - if the hostel or company accepts them that is, not all do!

My friend and I got VIP and YHA but, we've never actually used YHA. VIP is accepted all over the palce and you get your money back in no time - well worth doing!!!

Go to the site for more info -

Have a fab time!

You're gonna love it!

Also I have bought a YHA card before setting out on a RTW this summer - it has already paid for itself with 10% off at Millets and Blacks, as well a insurance. See YHA website for offers.
