I turned 26 last month and was offered permanent full-time job with nice company so against all common sense, I decided that I have to go and fulfil my my ambition of travelling/working in New Zealand before i am a) too old b) too settled. But I am just wondering how old everyone else is? Am I going to be the oldest traveller among a group of college graduates? Is the average age 18-21?? Also has anyone any information on sub-editing or temporary teaching work in NZ?
26 is definitely not too old. I don't think any age is "too" old, but the age range of people travelling independently is huge. Yes, on the kiwi experience you'll mostly find people who're 18-21 (though even there there's a percentage of people who're up into their 30s), but your average hostel has maybe 40% of people aged 18-21, 40% 22-30, and 20% 30+.
Just go, you'll have an awesome time. (I definitely had, being 24 when I set out and 26 when I returned.)
Fraidycat, do it - you pussy

Oooh, that hurts. If my fingers weren't full of the arthritis and my eyes too tired from the cataracts, I'd give you a good ear full.
In all seriousness, I moved down to New Zealand for a bit, at 27 if you can believe it, and got by just fine. Granted, a lot of my friends turned out to be 19 (keeps you young), but there are loads of backpackers of all ages. I wouldn't worry a bit.
fraidy cat - My advice is that you do it or you may some day regret it. You will have a brilliant job and settle when you get back. Have fun and do what you feel is best for you.
I hope 26 isnt too old!!! I'm 28 and in the same position as you, giving up a good job and travelling later this year! My advice is go for it, I am.
I hope having and older grannies advice will give you some inspiration!!!
That was supposed to say 'having an older grannies advice!!!
