The cheapest way to travel the US?

Travel Forums North America The cheapest way to travel the US?

I'm planning to go to the US for about 6 weeks. Don't know where exactly I will be staying, but the relatives I want to visit live far from one another.

Should I go by train? By bus? How expensive are cars over there?

How far apart are the relatives? If it is over 500 miles I would suggest travelling by plane.
Train is pretty fair rates, but are not exactly the best way to get around. Buses are cheapest, but very limited in where you can go.
Car rental is expensive and impossible if you are under 25.
Where do you want to go? What are your main area's of interest? Are you doing the camping/hostel route or motel/hotel?

thanx for you're reply!

first of all: very low budget. so the hostel thing.

my relatives live in Ohio, and then in Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, California. At least that's all I know.
And someone invited me to come to Oregon.

I don't know exactly who I will visit, but it'll be a lot of travelling!

compared to Europe, the rates must be very cheap, or am I wrong with that?

Your three groups of relatives in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana can be easily visited by bus, with each state adjacent to the other. As CupCake mentioned, rental cars are tough to come by, even for us Americans, if you are under 25.

There is a main rail line that does run down to Texas from Chicago, Illinois, which is next to Indiana. I would recommend a plane for that trip though. If you shop around, hopefully, you will be able to grab a cheap flight on that.

Out to California would be the same thing, there is a rail line, but a plane would be better. I do not know where in Cali you are heading, but Oregon would be my choice of all the places you mentioned. Take that invitation and go up there, beautiful country.

Busses would be the cheapest of all your travel options but you would be looking at 20 hours from Texas to Cali, and 12-15 hours from Kentucky/Indiana on a bus. If you had a couple good books then you would have nothing to worry about. *grins*

I do not know the situation of hostels except in the major cities, so I can't really comment on that.

The way I travel around the USA is by hitch hicking.

I wouldn't recommend illegal/dangerous ways of travelling around the country.
