Optical zoom uses the optics (lens) of the camera to bring the subject closer. In a digital camera with optical zoom, the same number of pixels are captured when the image is magnified. The only thing that changes is which rays of light are projected onto the sensor to form those pixels.

What digital zoom does is enlarge a portion of the image, thus "simulating" optical zoom. In other words, the camera crops a portion of the image and then enlarges it back to size. In so doing, you lose image quality(pixels). If you've been regularly using digital zoom and wondered why your pictures did not look that great, now you know.

Most cameras have an optical and digital zoom, which can result in a misleading overall zoom. A higher optical zoom factor will result in a better image.

Hope this helps, have fun!

Digital zooms are evil in my opinion. It is purely a marketing ploy and is in fact a very bad idea. Effectively, they result in people taking irreversibly bad pictures.

Digital zoom is available on any computer with photo manipulation software, because all it is doing is cropping and enlarging the photo. It always results in losing quality and it is certainly not something that should sway you in buying a camera.

If you have a camera with digital zoom, your first priority should be to turn it off.

Optical zoom is a good thing though and generally its a case of the more the better

Optical all the way.digital is only any good if you want to see something in particular.
But for taking a photo, there is no camparison its got to be optical, your PC can zoom in better than the digital zoom on the camera.
