I'm currently in Bangkok, arrived late last night and just stayed at a guest house near Th Khao San because it was easy and late. Its an ok place, but I want to move somewhere else and was wondering if anyone knew of any good hostels in Bangkok which are nice and good places to meet other travllers. Some of the guesthouses Ive seen seem to not really have the dorm room/commonspace thing going, and I havent met anyone at my place. I'd like to stay in the Khao San area since its where I know, but if anyone knows of any good places that they reccommend either in this part of town or another I'd like to hear it. Doesnt need to be the absolute cheapest place, but low/medium cost. Also if anyone else is in BKK and in desire of meeting up to hang out, drop a line too! Thanks!
Erik

Try a place in the Sukhumvit area called "Suk 11 Hostel" perhaps they have what you want. This hostel is located near the Skytrain Nana stop. They are located on Sukhumvit Soi 11. Their e-mail address is: -snip- or check out their homepage at www.suk11.com. A/C rooms, HW showers, free breakfast, close to many vendors and restaurants.

[ Edit: sorry, no emails in the forum please. ]

You can try Sawasdee Bangkok Inn (Khao San), just about 504 Baht. Sawasdee Bangkok Inn is one of the most beautiful hotels on the Khaosan Road area.

You can find out more information from here : http://www.hotelsguru.com/showhotel-20387.html

If you're looking for an oasis in the Bangkok heat, I would personally recommend is Rambuttri village inn, which is down soi rambuttri, 5 mins from KSR & a little quieter & cheaper. It has a roof top pool which is heaven after a day sweating in Bangkok!

The best rooms are the ones with a/c & a tv. Don't get a room with a fan, they're too hot & a little grubby (although cheaper) We paid 700 baht for a double room with a/c, tv & private bathroom. It's best to book, as they're often full.

Check this site for more details:

Hey guys,
are you better off booking a hostel before arriving in Bangkok or are you better off just heading to the main back packer street and finding a place there!?

From what I have read here... it's better to go and find a place, because sometimes i guess you can book a crappy room, at least if you go and book it you can have a look at it first.:)
