Rach-a has indicated that this thread is about New Zealand

I am hoping to go to NZ (with a stopover in Sydney along the way)! I hope to stay in hostels as a lone traveller as it seems like a good way to meet people and good value also. For those of you who have stayed in Hostels either on your own or with someone you know, how did you find it? I'm curious. This includes if you stayed in dorm beds, single rooms or whatever. I am trying to explore the best options available. Any crazy, bad or good stories are all good too ;)

Thanks peeps

I'm my opinion hostels are great for meeting people! Nice and cheap too- the last place I stayed at was $12 a night and it was of great quality. It was on Airlie Beach which is on the central-North coast of Queensland in Aus.
The only down-side is the lack of privacy, as was demonstrated to me on the last night I stayed in Airlie and one of the blokes we were in the same room with brought home a girl for the night. I think the privacy issue was more with them, but we wern't the happiest in the morning either!!!

I found one or two of the city youth hostels in Auckland a little unfriendly, people not as willing to talk to each other as much as in the smaller hostels, where they just came up to you and introduced themselves. I dont know if it was just luck of the draw at the time. But i have meet a few nice characters along the way, Within an hour of meeting we were sat in the pub having a few beers

Well so far, it sounds as if I should opt for a smallish hostel with a bar - preferably no curfew, not too big and trendy and a single room. Keep 'em rolling guys. Just I am travelling alone and have never been in a hostel in my life and so any information is good for me thanks.
