Would holding a criminal record for possessing a cannister of cs gas prevent me from visiting America on holiday? The record is 10 years old, when I was 19 years old. A close friend of mine who has been living in England goes back home to America and I would like to be able to visit.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Strictly speaking if you have ever been arrested you cannot enter the US under the visa weiver scheme (this allows certain nationals entry to the US for 90 days without a visa). I had no problems when I went, dispite 2 arrests (only resulting in cautions). I had been warned by the UK police that the US would be aware of the of my arrests, but in the end I was OK and got in on the visa weiver.

The only practical effect of your record is that you'll have to apply (and pay for) a visa before you go, but that would be better than them turning you around and sending you straight home!

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info Simon. I shall apply for visa. Would rather know before flying 8 hours only to be sent back!
