Hello:
There are many buses going from Cusco to Puno, and then to La Paz (Bolivia), but few that go directly to La Paz from Cusco. The direct buses cost $20 more less, and take 12 hours.

I advice you to be very careful in the bus station in La Paz, recently 3 tourists (2 Austrians and 1 Spanish) were kidnapped and then murdered in La Paz. They took a taxi that was stop by a fake policeman who found drugs in the car and supposedly would take them to a police station, but they ended up kidnapped for a week, in the meantime the kidnappers withdrew nearly 7,000 US dollars, until they credit cards were cancelled and they murdered them.

This isn't an isolate incident, many reports like this has been done by tourists, unfortunately, this time it ended with 3 dead.

My advice, don't take a taxi at the bus station, you better call a taxi company from the bus station and wait to been pick-up, or even better, request this service to your hotel. A cheaper option is to walk couple of blocks away from the bus station before take a taxi.

Best regards,
Ivan

Im heading over there this week for a first time visit to SA. We are going from Cusco to La PAz but Im sure it works the same in reverse! We are hoping to take the train from Cusco to Puno (goes 3 days a week). Buses run daily. From Puno we will do a day trip to the Uros islands though may stay overnight on Taquille. Back to Puno then either bus to Copacabana (or La Paz) or boat across Lake Titicaca to Copacabana. A few days there and on to La paz. From what Ive read, its easy enough to organise these trips once you get to each destination, though you may have to wait a day or two. We intend to organise the next leg as soon as we arrive in each place so we can plan ahead a little.

Hello,
Where did you learn about the death of the Spanish person? Was it in the newspaper or a website. If a website, can you give us the url?
Thank you very much.
