If you don't want to take a plane, the only public transportation
overland is by bus. It takes about 17 hours each way and the cost
for the return trip is about 250 reais (1 USD= 2.15 Reais). The are
different bus-companies, but most of them leave from the Barra-Funda
bus station in SP. I suggest that you stay at least 2 full days and
preferably three days. One full day at the argentinian side, half a
day at the brazilian side + some hours at the very nice bird-park right
next to the brazilian side. Add some more time if you want to do some
of the adventure things they offer like boat tours etc. There is also the Itaipu dam - the biggest in the world - which is well worth a visit. Then it is intersting to spent a half day tour going into Paraguya.

cheers, SOl

Hey,
I did this journey by plane to florianopolis (with gol from sao paulo, flight time ca. 1.5h) and then from joinville to iguaƧu by bus. i chose pluma as bus company but wasn't very happy with them (not much space for my legs, no food or drinks - compared to the 6h bus ride sao paulo-rio). this bus ride took about 21h.
the brazilian side of the falls is nice because you have a wonderful panoramic view over the falls. though, if you want to get closer to them, you should go to the argentinian side. to do both, you should at least stay there two full days (3 nights).

have fun!
