Can the USA be covered in a Month?

New York, LA, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Florida

or is it just easier doing the country on a tour

It can be done but you'll at best get a taste. I think you are trying to cram too much in considering you have very big cities as your destinarion. just some opinions...

Vegas - see the strip and essentially you've seen the main attraction so unless you like to gamble probably cut down the time you are planning there.
New York - overwhelming and too much to do in just a few days.
Florida - huge state... but a few days in Orlando probably is what you want... bring the money getting into the parks is very pricy.
Miami and LA are both places for trendy clubs, beach scenes, and watching the beautiful people - you might find them too alike (but Miami is more fun)
Chicago - big city, great attitude, lots to see.

Personally I'd probably cut out at least one place - but 5 days in LA and 2 in vegas, and a 3/4 split in Florida would probably work too if you deel the need to cram it all in.

have fun.

Just to add to what DocNY said, I think you should plan at least 5-7 days for New York. This is one of the best cities in the world and there are tons of things to see and do. My friend and I stayed for a week and didn't even begin to see everything. Enjoy your trip!

Since Miami and LA are a lot alike--you could go to Miami, then instead of LA go to San Francisco or Seattle.

If it were me, I'd skip LA and go to a national park or monument in the west--Yellowstone/Grand Tetons, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Lake Powell, Yosemite/Sequoia, Redwood, Glacier, or Rocky Mountain National Park. This would be a completely different experience from a large city.

One other thing I should mention--Miami and LA are alike in the beaches--but the weather in LA in summer or in the early Fall is much, much better than in Miami. Miami gets extremely humid--and LA has no humidity at all. So depending on when you will be here--LA (or even San Diego) might be much the better choice.

Calcruzer makes an excellent point...don't discount the humidity in the Southeast, as it gets ridiculous. You feel as if you're drowning with every breath you take (alright, so that might be an exageration, but the humidity is terrible.
