Im going to europe and mauritius in july.
im weighing up my options in taking more sd cards to take photos or bring a laptop.
pro: buy less sd cards and transfer all photos at the end of everyday
con: the weight of the laptop and hassle of carrying it around
what do you guys think? and what are your experiences?
I'd say it depends on for how long you're going. Up to a month you should be fine with just the cards (you can transfer the contents and burn it to cds at internet cafes everywhere if you run out of space), longer than that and I'd take the laptop. (Also so you can do some editing right away; in my experience the longer you wait to get started the exponentially longer it'll take to get done.)
Do still burn the photos to cd even with laptop though, and send one of the cds home per snail mail in case the laptop gets stolen (and have good insurance) - you don't want all your eggs in one basket.
Why don't you buy this like I have done:
On it's poorest quality setting it holds nearly 9,000 photos on my Ixus 50. On it's highest quality pics it holds just over 4,000 and is dirrrrrt cheap. There's nothing dodgy about it, it works fine and is an absolute bargain! Snap it up.
well to be honest personally im taking a laptop with me too australia (im going for a year) and well i want to be storing all my photo's on the laptop edit them and then burn them to a c.d. plus you do get all the benefits of having a laptop with you, e.g. emailing home. (But definately get insurance for it )
just try and get one with usb ports, and a big hard drive for all those photo's you'll take!!
Herront there's internet access everywhere, and if you simply want a place to store photos and edit then use a site like flickr.com or photobucket. It'll save you the hassle of having to carry around a laptop.
windmill, i know there will be internet cafe's everywhere but then do they let you plug in ur digital camera to upload your photo's as from my understanding they dont let you plug in your own hardware.
Plus uploading all the photos you'd take during a year would take insanely long in any internet cafe.
Having a laptop for such a long time also has the great benefits of having all your bookmarks right there, your browser configured exactly how you like it, and above all, the knowledge that there isn't a key logger on the computer when you're doing your internet banking.
that is a very good point sander, i completely forgot about internet banking lol, its a fairly important factor though and well if im going for a year (hopefully more, i feel a laptop maybe a sound investment!) plus it has solitaire!!!
I'd say forget the laptop, it'll probably end up being more hassle than its actually worth. Lugging a laptop round will be a pain, as will finding internet access. Just spend £40 on a couple of 1GB cards and enjoy the freedom of travelling lighter, with less worries about getting your laptop stolen, not to mention cheaper insurance!
Easy choice, and by what you've written the answers in the question.
Carrying memory cards are not only lighter, smaller, space saving, but it's one of the most reliable ways of carrying around the photos.
Get a USB - SD card reader - these are really useful, as you can upload your pics faster and they also double up as a memory stick.
Take a laptop is just a pain in the butt unless you need it for work.
