I'm a 24 year old girl from Cork and will be going to Australia in either July or August for a year. Unfortunately, none of my friends want to go so I'm just going to bite the bullet and do it alone. It's something I've always wanted to do and if I don't do it now I'll never do it and really regret it. Would really appreciate any help or advice anyone could give me, but would especially love to hear from other people thinking of doing the same thing aroundabouts the same time.

Hope to hear from you soon!;)

Definelty don't second guess going for lack of a travel partner. There are lots of solo backpackers roaming around Oz looking for someone to meet up with. It should be no problem meeting people. Do your best when you are at hostels to meet your fellow travellers. If you see someone solo, chances are they are looking for someone too, so don't be shy. Also consider taking a backpacker tour when you first get there. Even if you aren't a fan of tours, it's a great way to meet people since most people are on their own. A hop-on-hop-off tour like Oz Experience is probably worth while because you can get off and work along the way if you want. And it really not a whole lot more expensive than taking the normal bus. I would say the East Coast is where you will find the biggest backpacker scene and it's the place to meet people. Try working in places like Cairns, Airlie Beach, Surfer's Paradise, or Byron's Bay. In those towns there are always lots of jobs and things going on, plus a whole lot of folks just like yourself.
Have fun

Hey, I'm flying solo also to Oz in May.

Don't be scared. You'll have the time of your life and when you get back home you will be the envy of all your friends with a gorgeous tan and full of stories of your travelling adventures.
If your around Syndey in the winter and want to meet up just give me a shout!!

Happy travelling

Yeah, I'm the same. I'm actually not that worried about going on my own now after talking to people on different forums like this one, even though I'm sure I'll start freaking about a week before I go. It'll probably be easier get talking to people when you're on your own, I'm hoping anyway(!)
