I saw tway's comment about Paul McSomething, I couldn't very well thread-jack.. though I was tempted. What are your feelings on Sir Paul and the Seals tway? I am thirsty for a debate...

Food is food, I don't care if it is cow, pig, chicken or seal...meat is meat(and this is no different that the protien from bugs, just a different source)...and maybe someday something will come along and say the same damn thing about humans...blah blah blah, the great circle of life, eat and/or be eaten. Eventually we are all the food... :)

Quoting CocoaQueen

and maybe someday something will come along and say the same damn thing about humans

As my mom always says "big fish eat little fish".

Well "food" isn't really the issue... the main reason is to cull the seals to protect fish populations so the ocean trollers can get better yields. A side benefit is the belts of coarse... because having a fur trim around your hat is cool. Food is way down at the bottom of the list.

Oooh - good thread, B!

Did you see the news footage of Mrs. McCartney, lying on the ice floe off Newfoundland, petting the baby seal? Well, that seal turned around and just about took the Mrs. arm off. And I thought: what, you think these are pets? You're here because these animals are cute? That's not a reason to protest the seal hunt. Even our old friend Pamela Anderson, at the Junos, said she doesn't like to see the blood of cute baby seals all over the ice.

I think their reasoning is very wonky. Seals are not pets, they are wild animals. They are also not on the endangered species list. I'd like to see the McCartneys lying on the Amazon floor trying to pet a colony of nearly-extinct killer ants or something. At least their concern would be well founded! Plus, as you mentioned, the seals are depleting the already iffy cod stocks. Logically, the McCartneys should have been lying on the ice floe petting a poor, albeit ugly, piece of cod!

It's not that I'm for the seal hunt, it's that I'm against people allowing the 'cuteness' of an animal to determine whether or not they want to get up and fight for it. This is why pandas are still around today, but thousands of insect species - which may hold the key to treatments for diseases and such - are left to dwindle out.

Ahh! I see Tway, and I agree completely. I didn't see any of that footage, perhaps though, however misguided a protest may be... it still is a good thing? Say for example someone is protesting Desert Storm: Episode Two Attack of the Drones - there reason being 'innocent' civilians are being killed. But really there are plenty of civilians... they are not going to go extinct by any means... so what's wrong with a few getting blown up?

My point would be then, that it is kind of easy to belittle someones argument for protest.

Another thing note worthy:

I heard plenty of people saying "Well... I don't think they should club them, why not somthing more humane like shoot them or something" - I can't even fathom the idea that shooting something with a gun is more human than hitting them with a club, really boggles my mind.

What exactly is the "humane" of killing anything? So that it feels nothing?... different means to the same end.

I don't know about you B...but when I go..I hope it is something fast...so I would choose a gun over a club anyday! Ever been hit with a two by four? Hurts like a sonamabitch! Not quick at all! Yes, the same end....but much faster...unless they hit you hard enough to open the skull with the first blow...then it is a toss up.

True CQ, I think one could kill something with one blow if hit just right. Or at least knock-them out. I just don't see why dying faster is more "humane"...

Have you ever been in pain??
I have, and I begged to die...just so the pain would stop.
I want it to be FAST!

I see what your saying, but how is dying fast humane? And getting shot with a gun doesn't mean you are going to die fast.. or die at all in many cases.
