Pattaya is just too popular for its own good. Very hectic and wild nightlife, not what you want.

I would go to Hua Hin and/or Cha-Am. Both are close to BKK, have nice beaches and are much more peaceful than Pattaya. Hua Hin is a Royal resort, King Rama VII started going there in the 1920s. The Royal Palace is open to tours when the Royal family is not there. There is more options in Hua Hin, more restaurants, hotels, shops, golf, etc. but Cha-Am has the better beaches and plenty of budget accommodations. That would be my choice to unwind from BKK.

If you are in SEA for 4 months, you definitely should hit Pattaya. Many really like the combination of beach/nightlife. The main beaches of Jomtien & Pattaya are not in the Phuket or Phi Phi class, but you do have another option. Just 40 minutes off shore from Pattaya you have Koh Larn. 5 beaches to choose from, white sand, clear, warm water for swimming/snorkeling, food & drink available at your beach chair Have a great day at a the beach and then sample the famous Pattaya nightlife.

My vote is for Pattaya. One reason is because it is only 2 or 3 hours from Bangkok on the VIP bus (Ekamai bus station under 120 baht.)

Yeah, there are are lots of bars and night life, you can enjoy and participate or ignore them - up to you! If you want to lounge around the beach area (20 baht all day for a lounge chair) you can "fry until you die!" A better beach for swimming is nearby in Jomtien (20 baht on a special Jomtien baht bus.) Transportation by baht bus (taxi) around Pattaya is 5 or 10 baht for foreignors (if you are Asian you can get by with 5 baht, like the Thais.)

AirCon hotels are cheap, even some hotels in the the 500 - 800 baht range have pools for their guests. Restaurants are cheap (all you can eat buffet breakfast from 85 to 119 baht.)

Movie theaters, several malls, weekend and day markets, lots of vendors and easy walking in the Pattaya area. Best thing is if you do not like Pattaya it is only a couple hours on a bus to get back to Bangkok and find another place.
