Hi Everyone, Please help us to find out friend Rafael Hernandez. Rafael is from Madrid but has been living and working in Stockholm Sweden for the last 8 years. He left on November 26, 2005 for a 4-month trip to south America. He traveled first to Mexico then to Peru. The last contact I have from him was an email sent on the 18 of January 2006. In his mail he mentioned that he would catch a bus to Bolivia as soon as possible. Since that time no one has heard from him. His parents in Madrid are old and they feel helpless. We are his close friends in Stockholm who reach out to all travellers, local persons in Peru, Bolivia to help us find Rafael. We have found out that money was systematically withdraw from his bank account using ATM machine in La Paz, Bolivia on the 22 January 2006, and again all money from his account was withdraw from ATM in La Paz on the 27th january.
Please contact the message center to get my email address or post your messages on this forum if you have any information or suggestions in helping us locate Rafael.
Thank you!
/Tessan

  • winces* That sounds awfully and scarily familiar: see missing in bolivia. I'm hoping with all my heart that this is not what happened to Rafael...

The original post does not mention whether or not local authorities in La Paz have been notified. As Sander says, the details about systematic withdrawals from Rafael's bank account sound agonizingly familiar. I haven't seen any more information on the web regarding the gang in La Paz who pose as police officers and then kidnap their victims. Does anyone know if any of the gang have been apprehended yet? There were photos posted of some of the gang members, but I've lost the link and don't know if they are still available.

quote]I advice you to be very careful in the bus station in La Paz, recently 3 tourists (2 Austrians and 1 Spanish) were kidnapped and then murdered in La Paz. They took a taxi that was stop by a fake policeman who found drugs in the car and supposedly would take them to a police station, but they ended up kidnapped for a week, in the meantime the kidnappers withdrew nearly 7,000 US dollars, until they credit cards were cancelled and they murdered them.[/quote]
This isn't an isolate incident, many reports like this has been done by tourists, unfortunately, this time it ended with 3 dead.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I found this on one of the other forums, it was posted by a Bolivian guy.

I just asked gallegos where he got the information about the Spaniard being murdered.

I've been doing searches in the bigger SA online news sites, but I haven't found anything about a Spaniard being murdered in La Paz. Has anyone else read anything in the papers?

I feel so sorry for the parents of Rafael...not knowing where he is has to be the worst. My heart goes out to them.

Hi The!
I've been reading some newspapers (from Bolivia I think it was) about somebody who call the police to say that he had seen the 2 austrians and one spaniard but it seems that the date he said was after the date of dead of the austrian coupple so they conclude taht it was just fake and that was a recompense hunter
