I crossed into Malaysia through the Sungaikolok border, which ideal if you want to go to Kota Bharu or the Perhentian Islands. I did this by mini van from Krabi, took me 12 hours, should have taken 8-9 hours really, but had to hang around in Krabi & Hat Yai wasting time & picking other passengers up. This meant I had to stay over night in Sungaikolok, as the border was closed by the time we got there! This wasn't my plan believe me. Try not to get stuck there, there is nothing to do & it's a brothel town for the Malaysians.

As for the Southern provinces, check the local news at the time you're traveling. It seemed ok when I went (last month), but there were a lot of police/soilders check points & they did stop our minivan, but I didn't feel I was in danger.

There are quite a few border crossings into Malaysia, it depends on whether you're heading west (Penang/Langkawi etc.) or east (Kota Bharu/Perhentian Islands etc.)
