Im off to Oz in the next couple of days. Can anyone recommend any good beers to sample? Are the most common XXXX and Fosters?!

Do Aussies serve by the pint?

...this is all essential information!

It's rare to see a local drinking Fosters or even a bar that serves it - its not that popular. 4XXXX is a Queensland beer that is made from old boots.

Try Tooheys New, Coopers Pale Ale, Boags, Carlton Cold....all good.

Aussies drinking XXXX or Fosters !!!
Theres a good one, opps sorry.
They have the brains to export the rubish to the rest of the world (that includes Queensland where they do drink XXXX).
AS for pints, well not quite it depends where you drink, but like in NZ you can get Jugs - just as good.

Try 'em all!

Most popular are VB, Tooheys and Carlton but I'm not enough fussy enough to say whats best!

Different states have different measures. Some have pints. You may go into a pub and see a bunch of big burly blokes in AFL shirts drinking what look like girly halves.... When you've stopped laughing enough to get to the bar, you'll find they call them schooners. Its bigger than a half.

Anywhere backpacker-y usually sell cheap jugs.

Why does Castlemaine have 4 xxxx's?
Cause Queenslanders can't spell beer.

Pints or pots (1/2) are the standard in Melbourne. Schooners are known, but more a NSW thing.

As for the beer; Carlton, Cascade, James Squire, Crown Lagers, Boags - there's a lot of good choice. I wouldn't touch VB, Foster's or XXX and Tooheys only when desperate.

Go to WA and you'll get Pints!

I work at a brewery, at Little Creatures.

I really do suggest you try their beer. Even better if you can visit Fremantle (in WA, just south of Perth) where the brewery is located, plus a bar and a resteraunt (very funky casual) and very busy, especially the Sunday Sessions.

They've got the general Pilsner, amber ale and pale ale.

The amber ale (called Roger's) and the Little Creatures Pale Ale have been infused with hop flowers imported from the US. They give the beer (esp the Pale Ale) a beautiful citrus fruity touch. The Rogers (low alchohol) have caramalts in it - so sort of a caramel like flavour.

Lonely Planets website have a thing on Little Creatures. So check it out!

Also try good ol' random beers like Cherry Beer, Chilli Beer...

"Beez Neez" is a great honey tasting beer

I just went to the old Swan Brewery (on Mill Point Road, just before Perth city), which is situated right on the Swan River (beautiful views) and has a bar as well as a resteraunt. Quite pricy the resteraunt, but fantastic food and drink. They are definately somethign you should try.
Every month they have a beer called the Brewer's Choice, which they brew a different beer.

This month was an alchoholic Ginger Beer- beautiful!
THe thing is though at that place they only sell Middies or Scooners.

Mmm... I love that Japanese beer called Asahi, I know it's not Australian but it's good gourmet beer.

Happy tastings!
