Can anyone recommend a good volunteer scheme? I would like to volunteer for a month to 6 weeks in South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, or South America. i'm open to suggestions on what to volunteer to do.

Any advice appreciated.

Not sure if I'm allowed to give out links but GVI have some good volunteer projects, was looking at doing one of them myself! You can find it at.

Kelly thanks for the info. Has anyone done a volunteer scheme? If so would be interested in hearing about their experiences and any advice they could offer.

I'm about to head off volunteering in a few days, I'm heading to Cambodia for 4 weeks then Northern Thailand for 8. That GVI place sounds good if its something unusual like working with Orangutangs that you want but it strikes me as being very expensive, I'm goin teachin English with an NGO called travel to teach and its significantly more reasonably priced than alot of the other volunteering orgs like i to i. I've no idea what the whole experience will be like yet but I can let you know in a few weeks if your interested!!!

I almost know the site of GVI by heart by now;). They not only have interesting volunteeringprojects but also expeditions. This is more in case you would like to do something in this direction afterwoods (more like training). I got a pretty good feeling about this org. I myself am about to plan an expedition with GVI. On May the 13th they have open days in London (only about expeditions). I'm going and hope to find an answer to all my questions. If somebody else goes...maybe we can join?
There are of course al lot of other organisations but like already mentionned before... they're rather expensive and I don't know if it's worth. I think it's better to look for smaller local NGO's....

For South America, there are some free and low-cost volunteer Ops
listed here

4-6 weeks is a decent stint, you should have a good choice of programs id you can commit to that length of time.

Am planning to go with travel to teach in a couple of months, in Cambogia. What can I bring that will be useful? For example pens for the kids or books (which level?) It will be my first vol. trip so I have no clue what to pack. If any one can help. thx.
