Hi - I have a mobile phone through O2 (Samsung) - when I emailed O2 to tell them about going to OZ and getting an Oz Sim card when Im out there - they told me this would not work and Id have to 'unlatch' it or something which I couldnt do now anyway because I have to wait until the end of my contract next Jan. Is this true and has anyone else had a problem at all or is it a load of rubbish?!

This is probably true. You must be on some sort of contract whereby the phone is "locked" to the O2 network. You either have to wait for the time to expire, or pay a fee to unlock it.

You can get mobile phones in Oz quite cheap anyway; prepaid phones for about $60 or so. Basic phones but what's it matter?

Thanks for reply James - that would seem the best bet then.

What is the best sim card to have? I have been given a Vodafone sim, but I'm not sure if its the best value for money.

They also have so many payment options, its so confusing...

No idea. They are all expensive.

I've never use Vodaphone before so I'm not sure about the cost. But according to my experience with Telstra and Optus, I find that Optus is cheaper.

i have a vodafone sim. they re pritty good and you can get prepaid caps. without a contact thats the cheapest way. some caps include like $200 of internation calls so u can call home. but you can get cheap calling cards n use public phones for cheaper.
your options are virgin, vodafone, optus, telstra and 3.
hope this helps.

i had the same problem when i left australia for the uk. you need to get your phone unlocked. You dont have to get it done through a dealership though. Small independant phone shops will generally do it. I paid £10 to have mine unlocked and then just bought a vodafone sim over here.

Before i left england i went around looking for a new phone and was asking about it working in Oz and all i got was a load of shite.

I was on Vodafone Uk and when i got here i went and bought a vodafone Au sim and it worked.

As long as your actual handset is tri-band. If you want to keep your O2 uk sim then you'll have to phone O2 and get them to set it up for you but it'd be much cheaper getting an Oz sim card.

I phoned up vodafone and set it up so that it would work here so my Uk sim works as well.
