Hi folks!

I am thinking of buying a digital camera while I will be backpacking in Asia this year.
I am wondering where I should buy it? if the price is almost the same in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur or if there's a big difference?

Cheers,eva

buy it in kl as there are loads of fakes in bangkok. my mate bought a fake canon ixus 55 in bangkok and it was very dodgy.

i bought a canon s2is in kl for about £250. it was very cheap and its a great camera

You can make a real bargain in Bangkok too - one just have to be careful ;) If you're in BKK, ask people there - or maybe here on the forums - for recommendations.

if you make it to hong kong they are even cheaper there!

i'm sure you can buy a decent camera in bangkok but there are an enormous amount of very clever fakes! the ixus 55 looked so real until a man in a camera shop in malaysia looked at it. he was very impressed but nonetheless showed us the actual original model... the one bought in bangkok was a bit thicker, had the logo out of place etc. very close but NOT the real thing. this obviously matters a great deal when you are spending over £150 on something and it isnt what you expected.

the camera eventually gave up the ghost after only three months careful use!

i would be inclined to buy the camera in malaysia and from a shop in a department store. or, as i mentioned earlier, from hong kong. i have never seen such cheaply priced electronics!!!

good luck

In Kuala Lumpur there are few wellknown outlets in the city centre and their business dealing with all kinds of branded cameras since the early days more than 30 yrs or earlier than that so they will not sacrificed thier good names in dealing with short term business , i am confidence you will have a better deals ,if you are in Kuala Lumpur.Make sure you ask for the worldwide guarentees.

Quoting Mohd anuar

Make sure you ask for the worldwide guarentees.

Couldn't agree more. Personally I'd never buy anything abroad for that reason (unless it did have a good guarantee and was dirt cheap), as the prices differences are not that huge as they were once (in the UK anyway). You've also got the hassle of the electric socket type difference...pain in the backside I'd say.
