Im visiting India for two weeks in Nov/Dec. I have not got a clue where to go.
Can you suggest a frew places. Im looking for places with great swimming beaches, great weather at this time, with a relaxed vibe and melow nightlife and lots of markets and shopping.
I dont want anywhere too touristy. Places that have got local charm please.
Thanks in advance.
Well, I think you are looking for something that you won't find. Since the vast majority of Indian's don't go to the beach for swimming, nor do they give off a mellow vibe or participate in much of a nightlife, you can't really find such places in India without it being incredibly touristy.
However, I would say that your best bet would be Goa or Kerala.
In Goa you will find nothing but a variety of great beaches, with a couple interesting places of culture to check out (Panaji and Old Goa). There is also some of the best shopping in the country at the massive Anjuna Market. However, most of the people you will come across in Goa will be tourists, so if you are looking for local Indian charm, then you won't find it in Goa.
In Kerala, you will find a couple great beaches in Kovalam and Varkala (the latter sounds a bit more to your taste). There are also some fantastic sights to see and places to experience, primarily the backwaters, which are a very relaxing place to see some South Indian culture and a different way of life. Cochin is also a great city to explore and the highlands are supposed to be really nice too (I didn't get there though). However, I found that besides a few stalls in the beach towns, Kerala didn't have fantastic shopping.
yeah i agree, i doint think youre going to get swimnming pools etc with a non touristy place. i think kerala as well, its really beautiful and tohugh some parts are very touristy specialyl around that time its really mellow there.
goa the same but less mellow, particularly towards christmas when the parties start.
nevertheless i enjoyed goa the most.
o and if you go to goa and are up for a more mellow atmosphere jsut avoid anjuna beach and vagator as theyre both the party sorta areas.
Since you are planning to come down in Nov/Dec i would suggest to visit Kerala first and then proceed to Goa.i know these places pretty well and since you are looking for places that are not really touristy i think i will be able to help you out.I am a native of Kerala and i know the place inside out, i would suggest you to keep off kovalam n varkala as these places are full of tourists.Kerala has some amazing highlands as well.
The same applies to Goa,beaches like anjuna, vagator n all are very touristy and is not the place for a person like you who is looking for somethin less touristy.
If you require any help pls lemme know..
There are lot of virgin beaches in Kerala n Goa that has not been explored by the average tourist,i think you are looking for those kind of beaches and highlands and evergreen forests.
I feel i will be able to help you to get to these places and enjoy the God's Own Country.
I have to agree with some of the earlier replies with regard to beaches in Goa. To be honest, the tourists are mostly concentrated in the beaches of North Goa. South Goa is substantially mellower in comparison. I know this because I stayed in South Goa for a few days in December 2004 but partied in North Goa. Look at a map to identify the beaches of South Goa. The Mandovi river divides Goa into North and South. Look at beaches on the map that are south of the Mandovi river. Hope this helps.
Everyone recomends Goa...yes..you have great beaches..but you don't get local charm. You will find foreigners like you.It is highly touristic place.
Even Kerala beaches like Kovalam and Varkala are very touristy..but Varkala is a bit better.
Suggest you to visit north keral where the beaches are less touristy as many tourits re not aware of such palces. In these places you can feel the local culture but not great shopping. Also almost no night life in these places.Basically except in big cities, there are no night life in India.
Weather will be sunny cool whole of india except in Kerala where it will be around 30 deg.C
if u go to kerela go to varkala beach, it is near kovolam which is tourist ghetto so if u want to go there it is close by but u r not surrounded by it. Beautiful beach, travellers place - no one brings a sutcase with wheels to this beach. If u r thinking about goa but dont want the torusit thing try Gokarna beach in Karnataka just south of goa, no night clubs or anything but there is always live music being played in a restaurant and bon firse being lit on the beach. it is a really beautiful place that will be spoilt in a few years thanks to new prodgects by the karnataka tourist development board (but fair enough they are poor they need the money) so chek it out now befor it becomes the new anjuna
