Hi,
My name is Nikki and I am a new member here at travellerspoint. I am from NYC. Me and my best-friend are planning a trip for May 2007 after we graduate. We plan on being away for 2 months. We plan on going to the following places and by places I mean these are the cities we plan on sleeping in:

Japan
-Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki

S. Korea
-Busan, Gyeongju, and Seoul

China
-Beijing, Lhasa, Chengdu, Xi'an, Shanghai, and Hong Kong

Vietnam
-Halong Bay, Hanoi, Hue, Dalat, and Ho Chi Minh City

Thailand
-Songkhla, Phuket, Ko Samui, Sukthai, and Bangkok

And if we have time I might talk my friend in to a trip to Singapore.

As we have been planning this trip we have run into several difficulties. The are:

1)What is the best way to travel through out China, Vietnam, and Thailand without diverging from our chosen route?

2)What is the cheapest, fastest, and most direct way from Hong Kong to Halong Bay or Hanoi?

3)What is the cheapest, fastest, and most direct way to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Southern Thailand without going through Cambodia or Laos? (My friend refuses to travel through either of these countries)

If anyone here can help me I greatly appreciate it. I'm also open to other suggest concerning our trip.

Thanks

Hi,

I cannot help with all your questions but all I can say is that, you are planning to cover a lot within 2 months, pretty ambitious.

I have only travelled in Vietnam & Thailand, but I can tell you I spent about 6 weeks in those 2 countries and did not cover as much as I wanted to.

I'm not sure who do cheap flights from HCMC to Bangkok, but you could try going from Hanoi to Bangkok with air asia. They're very good for budget airlines.

It's a shame your friend does not want to go to Cambodia & Laos, most people tend to include these countries if they travel to Thailand & Vietnam.

Please ask if you need any details regarding Vietnam & Thailand.

That is an awful lot to do in 2 months... You'll probably only have about two nights in each place!

THAI flies direct from HCMC to Bangkok but you'll be looking at paying over US$200 for a ticket. But if you go to Hanoi and get an Air Asia flight from there to Bangkok, you'll probably only have to pay about US$30. There might be other airlines flying from HCMC which are cheaper than THAI, but certainly Air Asia is the big budget airline in that region - so if you have to miss out Cambodia and Laos (which is a shame) you're probably better off flying from Hanoi.

Hey hey,

I can help you out with the Japan part.

Tokyo: Tonnes to do, if you like big cities, you can spend ages here.
Kyoto: Again, tonnes to do and see, can get expensive but it's worth a few days
Osaka: Similar to Tokyo but smaller. I'd suggest a day trip from Kyoto or just a stopover.
Hiroshima: Again, not too much to do except for the WWII museum and surrounds. If you have time, take a day trip to Miyajima, it's a beautiful island with monkeys and deer.
Nagasaki: More to do than Hiroshima, and a more varied background (dutch, potrugese etc).

I've lived in Tokyo for a year, and i've travelled to all the places you've mentioned. If you had 2 week in Japan, I'd suggest:

Tokyo: 5 days
Kyoto: 4 days
Osaka: 1 day
Hiroshima/Miyajima: 2 days
Nagasaki: 2 days

Have fun!

i can answer your questions about china.
th4e cheapest way travelling in china is railway but if u want come to china in June or July u'd better take flight.because the ticket is very hot in some lines.
i suggest your line liks this: beijing------xi'an------shanghai-----chengdu------tibet------chengdu-----hongkong.but china is so large and i am afraid your time is not enough.

Hi,
I can help you in Vietnam.
You can come to Vietnam from China, can take flight or train from Beijing to Hanoi. Or can go by bus if you depart from Naning or Kunming. Bus is the cheapest way, then train and flight is most dear.
Vietnam have many beautiful places to visit. Should start from Hanoi to Halong Bay, Sapa. Back Hanoi and train to Hue. Visit Hue, Hoi An ancient town, My Son. Then train or fly to Nha Trang beach, Mui Ne and at last Ho Chi Minh city. Add Mekong delta into your trip(2 or 3 days), then Phu Quoc island.
If ThaiLand is your next destination, find a flight from Hochiminh city or for cheaper, take a bus to Cambodia, spend some days there, then bus from Cambodia to Bangkok, Thailand.
Any more information about Vietnam, P.M me.
Have a good time.

Hi Nikki - u can also check out other budget airlines in Asia. They are based in singapore

tigerairways.com
jetstarasia.com
airasia.com (based in Malaysia)

good luck. I've flown jetstarasia for less than USD$100 to bangkok and phuket before on those. But you gotta book early. May 2007 looks very early =P i don't think they open ticket sales yet.
