Travel Forums Round the World Travel Accepts Debit Cards?

I was looking up info on Belize (My first stop) and I came across this bit of information:

Using an ATM gets you a cash advance on your credit card - NOT a debit to your checking or savings account.

Does this mean that I cant access money in my checking account with a debit card from an ATM? What about the rest of Central and South America? What about the other countries in the world?

Can I use a debit card to access these ATM's or do I need to get a credit card?

I've been able to use my debit card wherever I have travelled, although that has only been in Europe. If your card is an international card like Visa or Maestro then it should be accepted all over the world.

I've always used my debet card in ATM's and been fine. In fact I can only ever remember once having to use a credit card to take out cash and that was on Koh Pha Ngan where there weren't any ATM's....

I don't know about Belize but in Costa Rica there were plenty of ATM's where we could use our debet cards.

I've found that generally debit cards are enough.

The only place I've ever had problems getting money out is Japan. I was trying to get money out using Visa, but very few machines would allow it. Only locally issued visa/mastercard cards were accepted. Once I figured out which banks actually did work, it was fine. I'm pretty sure the same was true for Maestro, etc.. not easy at all. Be warned if Japan is on your itinerary.
