Hi,

A bit more or at same price , you can fly from Beijing to Shanghai.
Ofcourse if you love to take only the train, then it is a different matter.
Have a nice trip.

Hard sleeper (T trains) 327/317/306 RMB for lower/middle/upper bunk.
Soft sleeper (T and Z trains) 499/478 RMB for lower/upper bunk.
T trains take 14 hours; Z trains take 12 hours.

Yes, it's safe and fine travelling alone. Despite a half dozen or so going each nigth, they are normally more or less full. Book a day or two in advance if possible, especially if you want cheaper hard sleeper tickets. In soft sleeper you get given a meal (fairly basic and small) just after departure. Also, don't get rid of your ticket as you won't be able to leave Shanghai station without it (the same with any other train in China).
