Hey all, i'm planning to live in Sydney for 6 months- A year, still in the early stages of planning it all at the mo. Anyway, I was just wondering as fellow tourists what you'd recommend as the best area to stay in regarding good access to a beach, nightlife, main tourist attractions etc + Obviously somewhere where the work is decent (Building sites etc). I've seen Kings Cross mentioned but then on the next website people will say it's seedy and theres better area's to stay in. Any help would be massively appreciated, i'm only looking for a hostel for the first few weeks or so then once settled it'll be time to look for an apartment or something.

Cheers everyone

Chris

Pretty much anywhere in the eastern suburbs between the city and Bondi, and perhaps south to Coogee.

Kings Cross is a bit seedy - depdends if that's your thing or not. Also depends on your budget. Bondi, Bondi Junction, Darlinghurst, Bronte, Tamarama (Glamarama in Summer ) are some suggestions.

Hi Chris,

We stayed in Newtown when we first got to Sydney. It's a really great eclectic place. Loads of hostels, bars and restaurants and not too far from the harbour (10 minutes on the train).
For longer term I would suggest maybe the north shore as you get more for your money. Cremorne is very very nice, Kirribilli and all the way upto Manly.

Carragher, send me a message when you get closer to finalising your plans and I'll give you some specific feedback on what you're considering.

Actually I must say that Kings Cross is a lot cleaner these days and a better place to stay than it was, say 5-10 years ago. The local council has been on a massive drive to get rid of the "seediness", with some success I might add, although there is still much more work to be done. Also the good thing about Kings Cross is that it's a 5 minute brisk walk to downtown.
