My best friend and I are planning a vacation this summer, we're on a bit of a budget and with the price of gas so high we'll be trying to stick close to home, which is Tennessee. Any ideas for great places in the Southeast, somewhere in Georgia or the Carolinas maybe? Just a fun city with a great atmosphere and a wide variety of things to do. We're having trouble deciding so any help would be great! Thanks.

Asheville, NC is a nice place. Good live music, the surrounding area has some nice hikes and scenery, and the town has a artsy-fartsy/hippie feel to it, whatever that means. I've only been there a couple of times, but I enjoyed the place and think it's worth a visit. Just a thought...

You should definately come to Atlanta. There is soooo much to do here, no matter what you are looking for. Great nightlife, lots of outdoor stuff, great atmosphere, and a city with a cool vibe. I think there is a hostel here too, where you can stay for cheap and a good place to meet fellow travelers. Just look on hostels.com and hostelz.com

I'd like to second a vote for Asheville, NC. Visit the Biltmore Estate and enjoy the town and surrounding scenery. You are only a two hour drive to Charlotte area.
