I'm from Canada as well, and although the legal drinking age is 19 in most provinces, it's 18 in Quebec (as well as Alberta). And, although this may sound so innocent, I never felt the need to binge drink. My parents were pretty lax with the rules which gave me a lot of freedom to do whatever I wanted. That DEFINITELY included going out clubbing at 16 and indulging in the occasional shot of whatever, but I never went into excess. Now that I'm 23, I can say that I have definitely been drunk in the past, but not to the point of serious illness. I find that those people who find themselves in a strict family will often go off the deep end, i.e. binge drink, in pure rebellion. To bring in my geeky engineering background, a bridge always needs a certain amount of flexibility so as not to break under stress of people/vehicles. Same with people. Allow the kids to have enough freedom (that I find is age-dependent), and they will not feel the need to rebel as much as those under strict rules/curfews will.
On the matter of sex, I personally think that kids younger than 16 are WAAYYYY too young to experience it. It basically boils down to the individual, but honestly speaking, what the hell is a 13 year old doing in bed anyway? Call me a prude. Don't get me wrong, I think the laws can be a tad ludicrous, but there are things that should be done responsibly and sex is pretty high up on the list. Teenage girls are crazy-fertile so the pregnancy thing is always looming, and STDs are still a huge problem. The sexual taboo is so strong that some teenagers sometimes forget about the reality of it in their rebellion. I'm not saying they're all stupid beings who can't take care of themselves. Not at all. Just that they should all weigh the consequences and take the necessary precautions before jumping into the sack with someone. Condoms, birth control. These things should be available to teenagers. Sadly, on the birth control front, the access is restricted by the laws. So it comes down to the laws. Protecting minors is important for sure. Unfortunately, I cannot suggest a solution that wouldn't seem optimistic and naive. Too bad. I wish birth control could be available to those who eschewed the rules banning sex below a certain age. At least that problem would be helped, if not solved. I don't think guys need to be of an age to buy condoms... or is that too optimistic as well? I'm not sure about that one but they're soooo important. To bring my rant full circle, I don't agree with sex at a really young age but if you're gonna do it, be responsible. Seriously.
My two cents is: Obey the law of the land where you live.
Whether to have sex at 16 or 18, depends on your culture and society. My mother was married and had me when she was 16. Now a day, would a 16 year old girl in the US be matured enough to care for her baby, and if not married, how would she cope with the economic aspect of raising that child?
I noticed that someone said you have to be 18 for two males to have sex in the UK well they changed that now it's also 16
hi im from germany i ve read lot of the opinions youve written i think its very funny because in germany its legal with the age of 14 if the boy or girlfriend is under 18. so if both are under 14 its also legal! if the one is under 14 and the other one over 14 its ok if both want to have sex if you know what i mean. if you rape some body its another thing u can talk about here..the law isnt very strict in this case! :O sorry 4 my bad english i have to learn a lot else =)
it's sad that i've just joined this board, and my first post has to be about sex and booze lol you all have such great things to say on this topic, i must say. i am canadian, and i've actually looked at the criminal code of canada (basically a document explaining everything that is criminal in this country, along with maximum sentences) and found that a statutory rape law does not exist, at least in the form that it exists in the united states. for all intents and purposes, the age of consent in canada is 14, meaning a 14+ can have sex with anyone so long as it is consentual, and one of the participants is not in a position of trust or authority over the other (coach, babysitter, etc) Also, a 14 year old can have sex with someone as young as 12, a 15 year old with someone as young as 13 etc. There are no laws governing sexual acts between those under 12, but really... that's entirely too young!
and as for the drinking, i have a small anecdote to share: my parents recently came back from a 14 day mediterranean cruise. While in dubrovnik, croatia, their tour guide said that us north americans are nuts, we give our kids a drivers licence before we let them drink, whereas over there, kids start drinking young, so that by the time they are able to drive, they are already tired of drinking. my personal experience on this subject is that i consider myself to be very responsible with alcohol, and i owe that to my parents being very liberal in what they let me drink. the rule was i could drink whatever i wanted, as long as they were there as well. so i had tried beer, wine, and most liquers before i even hit high school. as a result, i had a respect and a taste for alcohol, so i wasn't so excited to turn 19. Thus, because it wasn't so taboo in my house, i was never so excited to go out and get trashed any way i could, since i could always drink in my own home. okay now to post something about travel
I STUDYING LAW IN ENGLAND WHEN I SAW THIS.

Hi, I'm from Switzerland...
I found this interesting topic when I was doing a google search to find out when you are allowed to drink alcohol in Britain. I read all that stuff about sex, drinking, getting married and so on.
I realized I'm quite unsure what it's like in Switzerland and just did another google search.
- You can have sex with others as long as they aren't more than 3 years younger/older than yourself.
- An adult (18 yrs) mustn't have sex with a child under 16 yrs.
(just to prevent children from being misused/mistreated by adults)
- When you're 16 yrs old, you can buy beer and wine.
- When you're 16 yrs old, you can go into a bar or disco, also after 9 PM - I didn't know there are restrictions!
- When you're 16 yrs old, you can choose your religion.
- When you're 18 yrs old, you're an adult. You can get married. You can buy whatever you want. You can drive whatever you want (if you have a driving licence ). And as a boy you have to do military service (starts with 19/20 years).
I think it's good the way it is.
If you really want to drink stronger alcoholics, you can ask a good friend... Bars and shops aren't allowed to sell alcoholics to children.
I'm gonna do a language stay in Bournemouth, UK. I'm 16 years old. Here's what I've found 'bout children and alcohol:
It is not illegal for children between the ages of 5 and 15 years to drink alcohol at home or in public, but they must not do so on licensed premises. Entry into licensed premises may be restricted for 5 to 17 year-olds.
- I mustn't drink on licensed premises (shops, bars?) - so what means "in public"?
- Do young Brits (around 16 years) drink alcohol? Where do they drink?
If you are between 14 and 17 years old, you may go into licensed premises (subject to some restrictions) but you must not buy or drink alcohol there.
If you are 16 or 17 years old, you may drink beer or cider with a meal in a restaurant.
- In other words, you must have a meal to get a beer?
- What's "cider"? Does it contain any alcohol? Is it made of apples?
It is an offence for 16 or 17 year-olds to be possession of alcohol in the street and the police may confiscate it in these circumstances.

And finally, do (young) Brits snuff? (sniffing tobacco)
Oh, hey... Don't get me wrong! I don't wanna get drunk over there. Just wondering.
Would be nice if anyone can answer my questions.
I'm sure I made mistakes, so pleeeease correct me
btw Is there a better expression than "do a language stay"?
Thanks for reading!
