I think the age of consent is in place to protect young people from older predator types more than anything else.

Iceland has a really stupid law about the consentual age. It's 18 if it's your stepchild, child of partner, fosterchild or child that has been entrusted to the person for teaching or parenting.
But it's 14 for all other people!!

Howdy, My name is Rick. I was facinated about rules and circumstances in your country. Reading on topics and doing researches about cultural differences will help me understand this. Drinking age there is 18 right? marriage with legal parent guardian signature is 16? Let me say an examle. If I was 25 and got involved with a girl at 16 in UK, it doesn't matter or are there rules apply to certain age groups? Especially anal sex.

i don't know if this is of any use to anyone but i am now 23 years old. i am british... well english. i have been smoking since i was 12, drinking in pubs since i was 14 and having sex since i was 15. i don't care about any of the laws in my country really... i feel that people are old enough to make their own decisions and to look after themselves.

i don't regret anything i have done including taking a number of different drugs. i have been able to look after myself and secure a decent education regardless of the laws in my country.

in my time travelling i have noticed a massive difference between myself and others from the us as regards booze... they always say we can drink loads. they are always shocked. 21 is a crazy age for alcohol if 16 is the driving license age!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway, i am pissed as i type this!

yer its pretty stupid i dont think there should be an age limit for sex as its nature at the end of the day - if ppl r goin out and they wana get togther let em - just because a girl is udnerage doesnt mean a pervert rapist wud stop and say nah shes underage cus hes twisted neway - the only thing sex laws do is prevent knowledge for young ppl about sex so when they have sex for the first time they wouldnt know as much as they should about the dangers its pretty stupid at the end of the day

hey... being a "rebellious" (haha!) teenager myself, i think that a country can make whatever laws they want, but it doesn't necessarily mean a teenager will actually follow them... i mean, you can say that the drinking age is 18 OR 21, but guaranteed more than half the population (of that age group) will have experimented or drink anyways!!
laur;)

Yes unfortunately I think the UK has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies! Pretty sad.

Why is it that the age of consent & to buy alcohol is lower in places like Holland, but they do not have the same problems as we do in the UK?

Every where I go around Europe I notice that yes people like a drink, but do not get so out of control as us Brits when they drink. Why do us Brits do this? The UK government has attempted to change our attitudes to drinking, by having drinking establishments opening until later, putting warnings regarding binge drinking on bottles of alcohol etc. I think it's going to take a lot more then that.

I know I'm diverting off the thread subject, but I'd be interested to know views of Europeans & any other nationalities as regards to why Brits drink so much. Are other cultures the same? I know that Russians, Australians & the Irish like to drink a lot to, any more nationalities?
