Amsterdam questions...

Travel Forums Europe Amsterdam questions...

Very ignorant American here in need of some enlightenment about Amsterdam..

The Euro is the currency in Amsterdam?

What should I expect to pay for 2 nights stay in a hostel? How about in a hotel?

Are there any laws that I wouldn't expect, that I need to beware of(like in Singapore, no gum chewing)?

And ofcourse, the coffee shops....

You can buy the cannabis there, and take it back to a hotel, or do you have to smoke it there?

Are you allowed to smoke cannabis in the open streets, or only in a private area?

Is it true, that the locals typically only smoke joints, and when you ask to use a bong or pipe, it is kinda looked down on?

Am I allowed to take pictures in the coffee shop?

How much should I expect to pay for a gram of cannabis?

Yes thats a long list. I really was unprepared to go there, but on the way back to the USA, I am flying through London, so I figured I should go make a stopoff since i'm in the area.

Thank you for any help you guys can lend. I don't have a guide book or anything, so i'm doing this all on advice.

Thanks again!!!

Like most country in Europe the Netherlands has Euro's. At the moment 1 euro is 1 dollar 25 (or something)

Like any other city Amsterdam has hostels and hotels in all different luxury and different prices. A really fantastic hostel in the city centre in the middle of the famous red light district is the Bulldog : http://www.bulldoghotel.com/

No, not that I know. In Amsterdam is allmost everything possible if you act with a smile.

And ofcourse, the coffee shops....

To be honest most tourist know more about the coffee shops than the local dutch. Because weet is "legal" a lot of dutch people never smoked it (like me)

You can buy it in the coffee shops (DO NOT BUY IT ON THE STREET !!)and smoke it there. Most hostels/hotels do not allow it to smoke weet on the room.

Are you allowed to smoke cannabis in the open streets, or only in a private area?

If you smoke weet on the street most people will think that you are a tourist or a junkie... It is not really prohibited but it is recommended to smoke weet inside the coffee shops or in open area's like the Vondelpark.

Dutch smoke weet most on party's. Use of a bong or pipe is also only on some partys.

Am I allowed to take pictures in the coffee shop?

It all depends on wich coffee shop you are, what you want to take a picture from and wich people are inside. Most tourist love to smoke weet in Amsterdam but do not want to see there pictures back home on the internet. If you want to take a picture allways ask the owner of the shop and explain them what you want to make a picture of. A smile allways helps.

How much should I expect to pay for a gram of cannabis?

A bag of 2 or 3 grams weet cost about € 14.- There are also joints (cigarette with weet inside) you can buy for about € 2.-

The United Kingdom does not have Euro's but British Pounds.

I think bjorn is right about everything, at least he knows more about weet than i do, but i'm just reacting to say that indeed with a smile a bit of politeness, almost everything is possible..

hullo... amsterdam is a great town and everyone is friendly as long as you are ;-) Everything said here is bascially true, but theres a couple things i feel i should clarify.

Hostels in general are about 20-30 euros in high season and as low as 10 euros in low season (winter). Bulldog is good, flying pig is good, bobs youth hostel is good... as long as you have a good head about you you will be ok, just do the important things like finding a place to sleep BEFORE you get baked out of your face

You can buy a maximum of 5 grams in coffee shops because having any more on you is considered trafficking and you may get a little more than a slap on the wrist.. im not exactly sure. In general as long as youre not causing any problems you wont get any problems.
You can take the weed anywhere with you, but like bjorn said, most hostels wont let you smoke in the rooms, but some hostels like flying pig and bobs youth hostel have a commons area that you can smoke in and meet cool peeps.

Also, as bjorn said, DONT BUY OFF THE STREETS, its just dumb and its not worth it. You may very well get robbed as well. In the shops weed sells for anywhere between 5-12 euros a gram depending on the quality and type. Ask to se a menu, and most places are cool about letting you have a nice whiff of the greens before u buy.

A lot of shops have bongs behind the counter so I wouldnt think smoking bongs would be a problem in terms of a social faux-pas or anything like that. bong are niceeeeee
oh ya, and im sure if u ask u can take a picture anywhere... and i really would recommend a short trip to the library and even just a 30 minute read in a guide book will do u lots of good!

Enjoy!
